How Zantac Works

Heartburn happens when acid from the stomach rises into the oesophagus – the tube that connects your throat and your stomach. A burning, uncomfortable feeling usually starts around the chest and can quickly move up into the neck and throat. Not only is it painful but it can affect the way you live your life.

Zantac works by targeting the acid at its source. It blocks the H2 receptors in the gastric parietal cells, which are the cells in your stomach that make acid. Blocking these receptors reduces the amount of acid in the stomach, so less acid can rise up to burn.

Zantac works differently to other heartburn medications

Antacids

Antacids neutralise existing stomach acid and can work quickly however only provide a few hours of relief.

Zantac offers two products which provide either 12 hour relief or 24 hour relief from heartburn with one easy-to-swallow tablet.

PPIs

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) reduce production of stomach acid in a different way than Zantac. PPIs can provide symptom relief for up to 24 hours but may take hours or even days to take effect. Zantac is fast-acting with relief starting from 30 minutes, offering faster relief from heartburn symptoms compared to PPIs.
